Slave and Farmer

Birth: circa 1926 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia
Death: May 1909 in DeSoto County, Mississippi

Daniel Walker Williams is my great-great grandfather. I of course never knew him. In researching the history of the Williams family, I have been able to draw a picture of Grandfather Daniel's life. Most interesting is the time he spent on President's Island in Memphis. He went there in the fall of 1862, entering the city of Memphis with the Union lines. His journey toward self-sufficiency began at the camp, and as a result, his sons became large landowners in DeSoto County, Mississippi, which is just a few miles below Memphis.

Grandfather Daniel was a Christian, a Mason, and a veteran. He served in the 63rd Regiment, Company K, of the United States Colored Troops.
